Bob was born in Brentwood, MO on June 4, 1933 to Marie Glasgow and Robert C Gillaspy, Sr. He married Jo Ann Herrod in New Orleans, LA in June 1963. He served in the USAF from 1951 to 1967, first on active duty in Korea and then in the reserves, as an electronics technician. His service laid the groundwork for his life's work in electronics. After the Air Force, Bob worked in television and electronics repair, even opening his own business, Lagniappe Television Repair, based in New Orleans. Bob was hired by IBM in 1967 and he, Jo Ann and his two sons, Tom and Rick, moved to Vestal, New York. Over his 25 year career, Bob worked for IBM in Manassas, VA and Lexington, KY, where he retired in 1992.
Bob was a lifelong, avid barbershopper, singing for over 30 years as a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society in a number of choruses and quartets. His greatest joy was singing with the Goldenaires, his quartet of over 20 years in Lexington, KY.
After Jo Ann's passing in 2007, Bob moved to Raleigh to live near Tom and eventually back to New Orleans to be near his brothers Jim and Steve Fine.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Jo Ann and is survived by his sons Tom Gillaspy (Kathi) of Falls Church, VA and Rick Gillaspy (Gretchen) of Rochester, NY and his eight grandchildren, Erin, Brenna, Olya, Taryn, Anya, Shealyn, Aidan and Fiona.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be scheduled at a later date after the Covid-19 crisis.
