Nancy was a survivor of St. Mary’s Residential School, was past President of the Ontario Native Women’s Association, a member of the Nishoomis Nokomis Group helping other residential school survivors, and had received the Ontario Senior Achievement Award for significant contributions to her community. Nancy was honoured to conduct the traditional water ceremony. She was a strong advocate for people battling homelessness, addictions and advocated reconciliation and healing. She also co-founded the “I’ll Help You” program and fought fiercely against the victimization of aboriginal women and for environmental preservation. She was an author and wrote her own book, “Approaching Dawn”. She also enjoyed picking blueberries and traditional medicines and lived her entire life in the Lake of the Woods area. She was incredibly proud of her family and never passed an opportunity to be with them, any reason to get together was a good one!

We would like to extend special thanks to the Ontario Provincial Police and her friends at Parkview Apartments for their care and compassion.

Nancy Morrison, Elder will eternally remain in my heart. She became my dear friend, mentor and teacher for many years. I followed her as she attended various ceremonies and events to share words of wisdom, prayers and songs. I was spiritually drawn to her every word, movements and grace. - One day as I entered a healing circle and songs being sung by Grandfathers and Singers, Nancy waved me over. She encouraged me to join her and I assisted in smudging the people and helping with the Water Ceremony for the people who were there . I fumbled. People laughed but Nancy gently placed her hand on my shoulder and said, " It's okay. You are doing good. " - So my journey began with her as she took me under her wing from then on to the present learning, doing, speaking and helping. Truth be told, I got excited and warm inside just knowing I would be spending time with her. To just sit and listen to her. Watch her. - I have many a story to share but will stay as is. - We, of the Treaty #3 territory will miss this grand lady. Her compassion for All of Life and Peoples. - My sincere condolences to Patty and Don Morrison, her family, relatives, community and friends who have kindly shared Nancy with us. - Chi'miigwetch - Aho.

Saddened at this news. Last time I saw her was at my sister Candys funeral. She came and comforted our family and sat with me and Bren for awhile. Offering her words of wisdom amd warmth in our time of sorrow. She said that she was very sad when she heard the news because she tried to help Candy. I was amazed at her strength ever since I can remember. Her independence and love of all people. And especially family. She had a way of making everyone feel so special. My sincere condolensces to the family. Much love and respect. 💗😥
