Christena Marian Istace was born on May 8, 1941 at home in the Hazelwood District. She is one of 5 children born to Constant and Anne Istace. She married Ivan Slykhuis on November 4, 1959. They had a long and happy marriage until the passing of her beloved in February, 2001. She lived on their farm until 2000 when Ivan became ill. They bought their little house in Kipling where she lived til her passing. She began working in Home Care in 1978. Even after retiring, she continued working and caring for others right up to this year in some capacity or other. She found her job very rewarding as people were very appreciative and she felt so blessed with the many friends she gained. She was a member of the CWL and volunteered in many other ways for her community. She made a huge difference in the lives of many people.
Christena was pre-deceased by her brother Fred, parents Constant & Anne Istace, In-laws, Tom & Myrtle Slykhuis, son, James, her husband Ivan, sister-in-law Donalda Morrell, brother-in-law Geazer Chanut, and her special friend, Frank Hehn.
Christena is survived by her 4 children Norma (Dale) Niebergall, Clifford (Candace) Slykhuis, Jo (Wayne) Mardian, Cathy (Les) Pentelchuk. her 10 Granchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren, her Brother John (Jean) Istace, and sisters Eileen (Emile) LaRonge, and Jeannette (John) Gall, sister-in-law Doreen (George) Cancade and numerous nieces and nephews.

Teach me trust and patience too
In daily tasks which I must do
When I falter, hear my prayer
Strength is knowing you are there.
