Born on November 25, 1935 in Newark, NJ, Connie graduated from Weequahic High School and from Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. Upon completing her formal education, she enjoyed a long, varied professional career. She was a primary school teacher in Roselle Park, then, for more than two decades, an office manager and bookkeeper for Folander Sheet Metal. In the 1980's Connie assumed multiple responsibilities with the Livingston-based Cherenson Group, an advertising and public relations firm founded by her husband Lee. But her family was the primary focus of her life.
Connie married the love of her life Lee Cherenson on September 2, 1955 in Newark. The couple raised their family in Livingston, NJ where they resided for more than 30 years. They then moved to Florham Park, NJ and lived there for a similar length of time.
Lee and Connie were extremely involved in Livingston Youth Services helping to develop a curriculum on interpersonal communication and behavior modification which they provided via workshops to educators in Livingston Public Schools. A huge sports fan, Connie rarely missed one of her children's games, and in the early '80s was a cofounder a youth lacrosse program. She was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets, and was listening to radio broadcasts of games until the final days of her life.
A long-time family friend recently observed: "Connie helped raise us all. She was a life coach before that was even a thing, and she had a gift for putting people at ease and making them comfortable sharing their feelings. And, she never judged."
Connie and Lee owned a home on Long Beach Island, NJ, and for decades spent the majority of their summers there surrounded by family. That, more than anywhere else, was her happy place.
Connie is preceded in death by her son Steven who passed away in 1994, and survived by her husband Lee, sons Robert of Denair, CA, and Michael of Lincoln Park, daughter Linda Ferris of Randolph, daughter-in-law Lisa Cherenson, son-in-law John Ferris, grandchildren Rachel, Ryan (and wife Cassidy), Cole, Samantha, Alexandra, Steven and Chris and great-grandchildren Evie and Kalea.
A private memorial service for Connie will be held graveside.
In lieu of flowers or food, the family requests that mourners do a good deed in memory of Connie.
