Funeral services for David Howard College, 93, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, May 13, 2019 at Gipson Funeral Home with Pastors Tom Haas and Frank Star officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 pm, prior to the service.
David H. College passed away on May 10, 2019 at his home. He was born on March 10, 1926 in Greencastle, Pennsylvania to the late William and Mary (Hammill) College. He was a life-long Lutheran and a member of the Faith Lutheran-Missouri Synod, in Woodville, Texas.
David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an avid student of the Bible, and taught many Sunday School and Bible courses over a period of seventy three years. He also sang in numerous choirs and choral groups over the same period, in addition to holding virtually every office of the church.
He graduated from Greencastle High school, class of ’44. He immediately entered the Army Air Corps Cadet Program during WWII. He served in the 29th Bombardment Group, 52nd Squadron stationed on Guam in the South Pacific. He served as radio operator/mechanic on B-29 Bombers. He later served on Iwo Jima in the Air Force Weather Service. Following discharge from service, he attended and graduated from Shippensburg State with a B.S Biology degree and later an M.B.A from Rollins College’s Crummer School of Business and Finance, Winter Park, Florida. He also took related courses from Penn State and Texas A&M.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Sowarby of Woodville; son, David E. and wife Laura Meyer College of Cypress; 3 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey College and wife Angela of Greencastle, PA; sister, Erma Shoemaker of Chambersburg, PA; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Stumbaugh College, who passed away in 2008; brothers, Boyd College, Calvin College, and Paul College; sisters, Evelyn McCarren, Louise Diehl and Clara Diehl; son-in-law, C.E. “Gene” Sowarby; granddaughter, Laura Jane College.
