It was here in Memphis that she came to know the Lord and was baptized into the church family of St John Missionary Baptist Church. Her high school days were spent at Douglas High. She graduated from there and went off to college at Tennessee State University (HBCU). It was at Tennessee State that she met her future husband, Bill (Billy) Scott. They fell in love and came together in Holy Matrimony. As a result of their union, they were blessed with two beautiful children, daughter, Lynda Kay and son, Haskins, Jr. The family moved to Athens, Tennessee and Athens became their home for many years.
Odessa was always good with numbers, which led her to become a banker. Her skills in banking became evident. Ultimately she was one of the top supervisors in the bank. She was an amazing manager of money both at the bank and at home. She passed this "budgeting legacy" on to her granddaughter.
Odessa had a deep love for the Lord. She worked diligently in the church. Her dedication showed and overflowed into the whole community. Much of her focus went toward young people. She and her husband (Bill) were a "Dynamic Duo" that catapulted many youth onto the path of success. Their home was a mecca for youth, partially because Bill coached almost every sport (1st through 12th grade) and Odessa was a loving "Mother" figure that so many of these kids needed. She was an avid reader, though she loved to read "Romance Novels", she had a hunger to know and learn the "Word of God", her Bible.
Odessa enjoyed gardening, keeping a clean and orderly, house and loved dancing with her husband.
She was a "die hard" fan of the Memphis Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers too. She enjoyed watching and rooting for her teams on television but even more in person. Odessa Nickelberry Scott lived a life that blossomed with the love of God in everything she did. In other words, she exemplified God's Word from Galatians 5:22-23....But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience (forbearance), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.....
Be blessed dear sister in Christ. You will be sorely missed but we release you into the Loving Arms of Our Father.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 3, 2022 from 4pm until 7pm at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave., Memphis, TN 38122. Odessa's life celebration will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 10am until 11am at St. John's Baptist Church, 3131 Chelsea Avenue, Memphis, TN 38108.
