Susan Alease (Freeman) Williams, (affectionately known as Susie or Sue) 91 years old, transitioned peacefully to eternal rest on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at her residence in Morganton, NC. The eldest of six children, Susan was born September 13, 1929 to the late Willie (Jasper) Freeman and Addie Mae (Kennedy) Freeman Thompson, in Bamberg, SC. She received her education in the Bamberg County public schools.
At an early age, she became a member and was baptized at Springtown Baptist Church in Bamberg, SC. She loved Sunday School and participated in various church activities, especially those involving food ministries. She possessed a love for cooking and enjoyed preparing food for the quarterly Union Meetings and annual Big Meetings at the church.
As a young adult, Susan migrated North to acquire better opportunities. She was employed in domestics for many years and was very instrumental in assisting with childrearing in many of the families, particularly, the Peglars and Elmo families. Her profound loving care impacted these children throughout their lives and was demonstrated to her by their many calls, visits, and gifts over the years.
Susan was a longtime active member of the Union Baptist Church in Stamford, CT. She was a member of the Helping Hands Committee, where she served in many capacities, particularly with food preparations and catering.
During this time, she met Lennie Williams, Jr. In 1956 they got married and were the proud blessed parents of three sons: Lennie, III, Curtis and Barry Williams.
In 1985 the Williams family moved to Morganton, NC. Susan pursued her love for cooking by working in local catering entities. She became interested in sewing and took lessons with Ms. Patricia Lackey, whom she admired and loved greatly. Susan became a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended and actively served on the Kitchen Committee, Red Hat Club, Young People’s Choir, Program Committee, and provided helping hands where needed in other capacities. She served faithfully until her health failed.
Susan will be remembered by her many acts of kindness and genuine love shown to many.
Cherishing her loving memories and legacy are her three sons: Lennie, III, Curtis, and Barry Williams; 6 grandchildren: Renae (Antonio) Sykes, Sean Raines, Aisha Jones, Tabitha (Brian) Hawn, Shakira Swain and Curtis J. Williams, Jr.; 4 great-grandchildren: Isaiah Williams, Kevon Jones, Antonio Sykes, Jr. and Samuel Sykes; 2 sisters: Ernestine Perdue of Denmark, SC, and Addie Gant of Bridgeport, CT; 2 specials daughters: Pandora Starr of Nassau, Bahamas and Jamie Lynn Elmore of Greenwich, CT; and a host of nephews, nieces, other family, as well as church family and friends.
Susan was predeceased by her loving husband, Lennie Williams Jr.; two sisters: Mary Alice Stroman of Denmark, SC and Gladys E. Preston of Orangeburg, SC; two brothers: Willie Freeman of Augusta, GA and Willie J. Thompson of Denmark, SC.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021 2:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
Due to COVID-19 masks and social distancing will be required
The Williams family has entrusted Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton with arrangements.
