Enid Songy Nielsen, age 95, died on June 16, 2021. She is survived by: her six children, Mary “Jip” Phillips, Tom Nielsen (Pat), Jerry Nielsen (Christi), Bobby Nielsen (Stephanie), Anne Wheeler, and Lorrie Cook (Erik); her former son-in-law, Michael Phillips; her former daughter-in-law, Tammy Nielsen; and her ten grandchildren, Aaron, David (Katie), Trey, Cory, Kristin (Alex), Taylor, Kelsey (Austin), Collin, Julia, and Joshua. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas Nielsen, Sr.; and her son-in-law, Rusty Wheeler.
Enid was born on February 17, 1928 on Evergreen Plantation to Claude and Fabiola Songy in Wallace, Louisiana. She was the last surviving of her nine brothers and sisters. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican College, having majored in both English and Chemistry. She taught for a short time at Holy Savior High School in Lockport, Louisiana and was a med tech at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She met and married Thomas W. Nielsen, Sr. on August 1, 1953. She was a devoted mother and wife and a devoted parishioner of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. She was a proud member of PEO, a philanthropic sorority that provided education for women. She was also a long-standing member of the St. Andrew’s Ladies Guild and the Fleur de Lis Garden Club. She also served as a docent at Herman-Grima House in New Orleans.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, 7100 Jefferson Hwy in Harahan, Louisiana, on Monday, June 28, 2021. The visitation will begin at 10 AM and the Mass will follow at 11 AM. A reception will follow at the home of Mary Phillips, 170 W Imperial Dr in Harahan. She will be laid to rest privately in St. Patrick’s Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Francis Villa Assisted Living, whose staff provided loving care for the last two and a half months of Enid’s life.
