Katie Genell Hunt Smyre, age 89, of Newton, NC, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn. She was born April 4, 1931, in Catawba County, the daughter of the late Glenn Allen Hunt and Katie Anna Poovey Hunt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Larry O'Neil (Joe) Smyre; 3 brothers, 3 sisters and 1 great-grandchild.
Katie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved to cook for her family and friends, never wanting anyone leaving hungry. She also enjoyed working with her flowers, cleaning her home, sewing and quilting.
She is survived by sons, Larry R. Smyre and wife Judy of Claremont, Nicky J. Smyre and wife Kay of Hickory; grandchildren Amy S. Fox(Alan), Jody R. Smyre(Kristy), Michael Smyre(Pam), Steven Smyre(Loren),Tiffany Smyre(Billy),18 great- grandchildren; sister Connie Kiesler and sister-in-law, Ann Lutz and special friend Tanya Smyre.
A graveside service will be held at Old St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2035 Old Conover-Startown Rd., Newton on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 1:30p.m. with Rev. Judy Drysdale and Rev. Gary Haddock officiating. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.
