Alvin William Wand, 86, of Charleston, SC entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at his home surrounded by his wife and children. Alvin was born June 25, 1933 in Elizabeth, IL to the late William and Elizabeth Goldhagen Wand.
Alvin enlisted in the Navy, January of 1952 at age 18. While stationed in Connecticut he met and fell in love with Patricia Quinn of Simsbury, CT. They married April 30,1955. During his Navy tenure, the family lived in many states, finally making their permanent home in Charleston in 1972.
Alvin was always happiest tinkering with small engine repairs, working in his garden and was a voracious reader. He always had a stack of books next to his chair. He was an active member of American Legion Post 147 and a member of VFW Post 445. He loved the Chicago Bears, the Atlanta Braves and good "dad" jokes.
Their Charleston home was a lowcountry treasure, where Alvin and Pat raised their 7 children along the creek, overlooking Morris Island Lighthouse. Precious memories were made during the many oyster roasts, birthday and holiday celebrations.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia "Pat" Wand, seven children: Patricia Lamar (Michael) of Columbia, SC, Michael (Marguerite) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Edward (Cindy) of James Island, SC, Brian (Mary) of Salisbury, NC, Donna Kennedy (David) of Goose Creek, SC, Chris (Robin) of Midland, NC, and Scott (Jennifer) of Moncks Corner, SC, eleven grand children, five great grandchildren, three brothers: Wayne Wand (Ester) of Elizabeth, IL, Dale Wand of Elizabeth, IL, and Robert Wand of Elizabeth, IL, and two sisters: Judy McGivney (Harvey) of Stockton, IL and Mary Lou Schaible (Jim) of Elizabeth, IL, and sister in law, Sharon Wand of Elizabeth, IL.
He is predeceased by his brother, William Wand, sisters in law, Judy Wand and Joanne Wand, son in law, David Kennedy and a great grandson, Grayson Schumacher.
A special thank you to Christine, Alvin's Hospice care nurse.
