Don was born in Peoria, Illinois to Henry A. and Evelyn (Nichols) Myers. He attended high school at Western Military Academy in Alton, Illinois, graduating in 1955. He served in the Army Reserve National Guard and the Army Reserve, and was honorably discharged in 1963. Don followed his father into the family concrete business in Peoria. He later worked a number of years for C. Iber & Sons before going into business for himself, continuing with the family name, H.A. Myers & Sons. Don retired to southwest Florida in 1995.
Don was an active member of the Estero United Methodist Church. He joined the Masons on his 21st birthday, becoming a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite in 1963. Throughout his life he remained active in the Shrine, and he spent many fun-filled hours under the big top volunteering for the Shrine Circus. He particularly enjoyed his time spent in the Royal Order of Jesters, which he joined in 1998. Don was also a member of the American Legion, Elks, and Moose Lodge. In the 1970s, he received his pilot’s license and was in a flying club. (A family joke was that Don belonged to everything but the French Foreign Legion. One of Don’s friends noted we might ought to check on that to be sure!)
Don lived big. He loved the beach and he loved to travel. He was always busy planning the next grand adventure. He loved meeting people from all walks of life and never knew a stranger. And, could he ever talk! His great appetite for life and generosity of spirit made him popular wherever he went and he was well-loved by those whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed.
Don is survived by his wife Anne, his loving companion for nearly 20 years. He is also survived by his children, Terri (Daryl) Jensen of Laramie, Wyoming, Andy (Darlene) Myers of Hanna City, Illinois, and Amy (Jorge) Romero of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Romero; a sister, Sharon (Norm) Hild of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri, and brother Robert (Marilyn) Myers of Canton, Illinois, several nieces and nephews, as well as Anne’s son Doug, granddaughters Chrissy and Dani, and great-granddaughter Zelda.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1, at Estero United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Horizons of Southwest Florida, an organization dedicated to helping underprivileged and at-risk children, or to a charity of your choice. (For donations to New Horizons, please make check payable to New Horizons of SW Florida and designate “In Memory of Don Myers.” Checks can be dropped off at the church office or mailed to Estero United Methodist Church, 8088 Lord’s Way Street, Estero, FL, 33928.)
