

Born in Boston on October 1, 1930 in Boston, a daughter of the late George H. and Catherine (Lally) Niland, Sr., she was raised in West Roxbury. Joan graduated with a degree in journalism from Boston University. She worked for the Manchester Union Leader for the renowned editor, William Loeb.
Joan was married for 37 years to the late John J. Cook, the owner and editor of the Norwood Times. Joan assisted her husband in all aspects of producing this iconic small town newspaper. Joan enjoyed singing and for many years was a member of the choir at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Norwood and the German choral group at the Boylston Schul-Verein in Walpole.
Funeral from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St. (Rt. 1-A), Norwood on Tuesday, November 27, at 8:00 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Norwood at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:30 PM. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
