Lu was also known as Mrs. Lu to her many students over the years and by her church family, Baby Doll by her beloved husband Frank just seven days shy of their 59th wedding anniversary, and the epitome of grace by everyone who met her.
She graduated from Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA, and later earned a Bachelors in Education from East Carolina University and a Masters in Education from the University of Tulsa, her life goal was to teach children. A career teacher for nearly 30 years, she spent her last 15 years at Bethany Elementary teaching 4th and 5th grade. Whether in school or in church, you would find her always singing, teaching, and caring for children. A faithful minister’s wife and hostess opening her home for ministry, Lu was a minister in her own right. She had the unique ability to make everyone she encountered feel uniquely heard, loved and special. If you were to ask each grandchild, they would each one, in turn, say that they were Mimi Lu’s favorite…and they would be right.
Lu loved opening her home to any number of family and friends and brought her southern Rockingham, NC cooking to Oklahoma. She was known all over for her skinny layer chocolate cake made especially for birthdays and her cinnamon rolls were a coveted gift at Christmas. Her house was always festooned with plants and flowers inside and out. It is no wonder her favorite color was green to match her thumb. Lu also loved to sing. Southern Gospel was her favorite along with Elvis. She even sang a solo this past week at Iris Memory Care during their chapel service. No doubt she is singing and dancing with her Savior right now.
Lu is preceded in death by her grand-parents, John and Lula Bell Sears and Judson and Viola Flowers, her parents, Ossie and Claudie Belle Flowers, her brother, Sammy, and her son, Derek. She is survived by her husband, Frank Tunstall, sister, Peggie Potter, brother, Dan Flowers (Diane), children, Franklin Tunstall (Angela) and Dena Chitwood (Chuck), and grandchildren, Derek Tunstall, Dalton Tunstall, Abigail Chitwood, Chase Chitwood and Zachary Chitwood, and many nieces and nephews that she loves very much.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and conscientious care provided by Frontier Hospice and Jolinda Ross and her kind staff at Iris Memory Care of Nichols Hills. The nurses and staff went above and beyond to make sure that her final days were peaceful and calm.
