Gunna was born on March 12, 1966, in Keflavik, Iceland to Sigrun Emilsdottir and Saevar Thordarson.
Gunna was a Christian. She believed her daily help came from her relationship with Christ. She sought God’s will in her life, even when it was difficult to accept. She felt her relationships with others was her testimony to her beliefs.
Gunna left Iceland in 1970 with her family and moved to Georgia. Ten years later they moved to Lake Mary. She attended Lake Mary High School, where she was a part of the famous Lake Marionettes. She bonded closely to her teammates, and together they won many awards. She then attended UCF and graduated with a degree in Radiology. After a short period working in her degree field, Gunna found and lived out her calling through a lifelong career in hospitality. Over the next 30 years, Gunna was in leadership in almost every area of food service, and catering. She was the standard all others aspired to, and lead others by her amazing example .
Gunna served the PTA in many capacities, with her strongest role as PTA president. She concurrently volunteered with Teague Middle School PTA, and served as Treasurer with Lake Brantley High School PTA. She has over 10 years of service. At Forest City, she fostered relationships to establish a board that was reflective of the multicultural makeup of our FCE community. She bridged the gap between students and faculty/staff in a way that united all as one big FCE family. Her service to the education of her own children, and that of all children was laudable.
Gunna was an amazing athlete. Even as she battled her illness, she did not alter her dedication to her children’s or her own physical excellence. In her lifetime, her mastery of different areas of athletics ranged from dance and yoga to endurance and strength training. She inspired and encouraged all around her to find the champion within.
Gunna was an amazing mother, daughter, sister and friend to all that knew her. Her influence on the lives of so many individuals is endless. She was salt and light to anyone she met. Irreplaceable, uncompromisingly good, and beloved describes our Gunna.
