Aunt Nina was a bold and fiercely loyal woman who feared nothing and lived her life just the way she wanted.  She was a mentor and a protector to those in her care.  As a young boy, I was blessed to spend a few weeks of summer with her and Rene. I was somewhat of an adventurer at the age of seven, and while visiting in Vicksburg, Mississippi, I made friends with a neighbor and off we went. We made a raft, floated down a stream before we had to jump into the water to get back to the banks.  We took a short cut through a train tunnel and had to sit tightly against the wall plugging our ears shut while the old coal engine passed through. I was covered in black soot and was hard of hearing when I made it back to Aunt Nina's. Boy, was she mad. I was made to sit in a wash tub and got the scrubbing of my life.  She was laughing by the time I got out of the tub.  She was something! I loved that lady!  (Mike Peterson)
