John Ryrie 'Stoney' Stone

December 16, 1946March 9, 2018

STONE, John Ryrie ‘Stoney’ – Stoney passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on March 9, 2018 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Palliative Care in his 72nd year. Beloved husband of 48 years to Allison Morson (nee Smith). Loving Dad of Rebecca Stone (Chris Buddle) and Jocelyne Stone (Kevin MacDonald). Cherished ‘Stoney’ to grandkids Evan, Emma, Tyler, Peter and Adam. Dear brother of Deborah Stone. Fondly remembered by his favourite furry friend, Ryrie the Rescue Dog.

Born in Toronto in 1946 Stoney spent his early years playing hockey for the Leaside Lions, camping, camp-counselling, and making many life-long friendships at Kilcoo Camp, where in 1967 he met the love of his life, Allison. After graduating with an English degree from Waterloo-Lutheran University, he married Allison and embarked on a long and successful career in Sales and Marketing for Proctor & Gamble, Ethicon, Surgikos, Johnson & Johnson, SSI, Healthpoint Canada, and Smith & Nephew, living most of his life in the Peterborough area.

Stoney will be fondly remembered by a vast network of family and friends for his quick wit and enthusiastic love of life. He wore many hats in his too-short life including dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, sailor, martini-connoisseur, gardener, wood-chopper, cyclist, dog-walker, trailcutter, x-country skier, enthusiastic tobogganer, pontificator, debater, voracious reader, sommelier, chief barbequer, and avid Stony Lake cottager. Stoney spent the final year of his life battling cancer. To the very end, he lived his life thoughtfully, bravely, without regret, and as an inspiration to many. He will be forever loved and always missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception at COMSTOCK-KAYE LIFE CELEBRATION CENTRE, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, Ontario, 705-745-4683. I had never met such a relentlessly positive person as Stoney . He was a joy to be around.
I am sorry we can't be with you Sunday but know Maureen and I are thinking of you. I know I will miss his zest for life and his enthusiasm for all that he did. You and your family were blessed with a very special man. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I joined JJMP in Peterborough in 1991 just after it was formed. It was a confusing and interesting period as all the J&J medical companies in Canada came together. It was also a little pretentious. But I quickly learned that a good source of common sense and unvarnished truth was John Stone. Although I did not know him well, I appreciated his company.

My sincere condolences to his family.

Saddened to learn of John's passing. I also had the pleasure of having John cross my path early in life growing up in Leaside playing for the "Lions" in hockey and baseball at Talbot-the picture that Ken Jones included in his tribute tells it all about Stoney.--fondly remembered!!!

Stoney was a good friend for many years through Leaside Lions hockey and high school. Always quick with a smile and laugh, liked by everyone—a really good guy!
Sincere condolences on his passing. The world has lost a wonderful man!

I have a clear memory of John thoroughly enjoying himself as he welcomed,, entertained and barbequed on the occasion of the family’s 100 Year summer celebration at Stoney Lake. It was our first trip to the Kawarthas and we were lucky enough to enjoy the Stone hospitality and join in their amazing Clam Bake. A golden memory for sure.

When we made a business move from Vancouver to Peterborough in the 1980’s, the Stones were two of our first friends. During our years there, John, Allison, Jocelyne and Becky included our family in Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations and in many trips to the cottage. How lucky we were to call them friends. During our time together, John’s devotion to his family and his gratitude for the life he led was apparent as the foundation of his life.

Our thoughts are with you Allison, Becky and Jocelyne and your extended families during this sad time. He will be dearly missed by many.
