Milton Bryant Abernathy
Milton Abernathy, 90, passed away Wednesday May 29, 2013 at Douglas T. Jacobsen State Veterans Home after a long journey with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born to Arthur & Sinahlue Abernathy September 8, 1922 in Gainesville,Texas and moved with the family to Washington, DC when he was 7. After graduating from Anacostia High School, Milton joined the US Army Air Corps and served as a Navigator on a B-17 based in Molesworth, England. In February of 1944 his plane was shot down over occupied France and he spent the remainder of WWII as a Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft 1 near Barth, Germany . After the war, Milton attended Rennselear in Troy NY on the mathematic scholarship he had won prior to enlistment. In Troy, he met the love of his life, Lillian Bulger, and married her June 10, 1950 (the day after his graduation). In 1951, Milton went to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in Research & Development . After retiring in 1974, he and Lillian moved to Port Charlotte and worked in Real Estate in Port Charlotte and Englewood. Milton was a former member of St. David's Episcopal Church, the VFW, the American Legion and Ex-POW groups. Milton is survived by his wife Lillian, daughter Diane ( Charles) Deily, son Leon Abernathy, 3 grandsons: Curtis ( Julie), Morgan (Christine) and Casey Deily, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters: Peggy Graham and Wanda ( Jack) Raymond, 20 nieces & nephews and many great-nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (Winston & Robert) and 1 nephew and 1 niece. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that donations be made to "Bayside Operations" (43550 Riverpoint Drive Leesburg, VA 20176) a charity for recuperating veterans and their families founded by Milton's nephew Neal Zimmerman. Visitation will be held from 1-2 pm on Monday, June 3, 2013 with funeral services starting at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Peace at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood You may express your condolences to the family at, www.lemonbayfh.com.
