She was born Riitta Maija Toivakainen in Antola, Finland on Aug 17, 1938. She came from a family of 8 and was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters Kauko, Eila, Irja, Aini and Matti. She is survived by her older sister Anja and her youngest sister Pirjo as well as her daughters Anne Williams (grandson Tyrell) and Tania Honeysett (Scott Connelly) - grandsons Darren Honeysett (Ashley) and Brett Honeysett and many nieces and nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
Rita arrived in Vancouver on November 12,1958 where she met and married Sakari Aho on Nov 13, 1965. They made their home in Port Coquitlam for many years on a small hobby farm, then purchased 3 acres of land down the road, where Sakari built their home with the help of Rita and many family and friends.
Sakari was tragically killed in a logging accident in 1994 and Rita continued to live in the house helping raise her 3 grandsons who called her Mummu. She eventually moved to a townhouse in Port Coquitlam and more recently, moved out to Maple Ridge with her daughters on another small farm. Here she enjoyed the horses, dogs and her cats. Rita loved to watch hockey, playing cards dancing.
She will be dearly missed by many.
A small family burial service will be held and a future Celebration of Life in the spring/summer will be announced.
