

Roman Mahnic was born on October 28, 1933 in Povir, Slovenia and passed away peacefully in Regina on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the age of 80 years. He was the youngest child of a family of six boys and five girls. Roman was predeceased by his parents, Jakob and Marija, brothers Pepo (survived by Milena), Janez, Karlo (Jozijca) and Stanislav, sisters Paula Stok (Roman), Dragica Ocvirk (Milan) and Marica; father and mother-in-law, Peter and Katharina Schmidt; and brothers-in-law Savo Bratuz (survived by Emilija), Adam Schmidt (Leontine) and Daniel Schmidt (survived by Hermine). Roman left his native Slovenia and immigrated to Canada in 1954, settled in Regina and started working in the construction trades. Soon afterward he met his future bride, Genevieve (Jenny) Schmidt. They married in 1956 and raised six sons in Regina attending their many hockey, baseball, football and basketball games along the way. Roman enjoyed playing his beloved bocce ball and cards with family and friends. Roman developed his skills as a craftsman in tile-setting and the installation of terrazzo, marble and stone in many of Regina’s landmark buildings from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s, starting with Antonini & Sons and finally as owner of Roman Tile & Sons. Roman and Jenny also spent eight years as proprietors of the Ituna Motel and then retired to Rose Valley and then Westbank, BC in 1996 where he enjoyed twelve wonderful years as his dream to grow fruit in Canada was finally realized. Following a three year stay in Calgary, Roman and Jenny returned to Regina in 2011 to be close to family and friends. Roman is survived by his brother Lado (Danica), sister Natalija, sister-in-laws Gertrude Korosec (predeceased by Rudy), Lydia Vendramin (predeceased by Alojz), brothers-in-law Fergy Schmidt (Pat), Martin Schmidt (Portia), and his many nephews and nieces in Slovenia and Canada; his loving and caring wife, partner and soul-mate of 58 years, Jenny; his six sons, Robert (Natascha), Edward, Paul (Lisa), John (Valerie), Joseph (Carla) and Roman Jr.; twelve grandchildren, Briegh Anne (Trevor), Reis, Olivia, Ian (Brittany), Tiffany, Michael (Maria), Haley, Kasey, Jared (Lynsey), Dallas, Paige and Aaron; and four great grandchildren, Pearson, Avery, Nami and Daniel.
