Joan was raised on Lawton Avenue in Lynn, MA where she attended public school and Lynn English High School. A member of the National Honor Society, she had the opportunity at the age of 15 to accompany her beloved Aunt Ettie Mendelsohn Summers for the trip of a lifetime.
They traveled aboard the Queen Mary to London, England to explore her father’s roots and to meet extended family that still lived there. When she returned home she continued her education at Boston University.
In the summer of 1951 at Doanes Ice Cream on Lynn Beach, Joan was introduced by her friend to Lloyd Clayman whom she married on March 4, 1953 at The Beacon House in Brookline, MA. It was a Wednesday evening and a most elegant setting. She always enjoyed looking at those photographs and sharing her memories with her family.
In 1957 Joan and Lloyd bought a home in Lynnfield MA in the very special newly built neighborhood of Glen Meadow. To this day the quality of the experience they provided for their children still rings true. Those neighborhood children now in their 60’s and 70’s still gather out of love and respect for all the adults who always looked out for them as well as their everlasting bonds with each other.
During that time Joan was not only a homemaker, but also worked in the insurance industry for both Liberty Mutual and Lynford Shmiskiss of Lynn, MA.
She was a founding life member and chaplain of Lynnfield Saugus Hadassah and volunteered at Lynn Union Hospital in pediatrics.
Always a “fashionista” she loved shopping for and wearing beautiful clothes always taking pride in her appearance.
Joan was the cherished mother to Cathy Clayman and her husband Neal Weinstein of Coral Springs, Florida and Amesbury, Massachusetts and Attorney Howard Clayman and his wife Glenda Smith Clayman of Exeter, New Hampshire. Grammy Joan to Harris Clayman, Hannah St. Laurent and her husband Zach St. Laurent, Holly Clayman and her husband Jan Loewenstrom, Henry Clayman and her wonderful daughter in law Janet Hill Clayman.
A private graveside service was held at Pride of Lynn Cemetery on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
