Sandra L. Ehlers, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on August 25, 2018, with family by her side. Sandy was born in July 1939 to Dr. Russell and Mrs. Dorothy (Lewis) Lyster in Los Angeles, CA. She grew up riding horses, exploring Griffith Park, playing tennis, bowling, and living the life of a young person in 1950's LA. She graduated from LA High in 1957. That Fall, as a new freshman at Occidental College, Sandy met a tall, handsome young man named John Ehlers at the Freshman dorm dance. Four years later, the day before their college graduation, Sandy and John married. Sandy was Phi Beta Kappa in 1960 and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1961. While John completed medical school, Sandy taught 5th and 6th grade elementary school for 2 years in South Pasadena. They had 2 sons, John Jr. and David. John completed medical school and was drafted into the US Army and eventually stationed in Germany, where their daughter, Melinda, was born. After 3 years in Germany, the family returned to Monterey Park. They spent one year in Michigan for Dr. John to complete medical specialty training. The family returned to California, settling in La Crescenta in 1974. Sandy stayed home to raise their children and volunteered at their school. They attended La Canada Presbyterian Church where she became the secretary to the Senior Associate Pastor. Sandy retired in 1997, and she and John moved to Cambria, California, after the birth of their first grandchild, Makenna, to daughter, Melinda, and son-in-law, Martin Mullis, who reside just 30 minutes inland. They were active in their church, Community Presbyterian Church of Cambria, and community. Sandy and John traveled as much as possible throughout their married life, and once in Cambria, they often traveled with a local RV club, the Coast Rollers. John and Sandy's last big adventure was a trip to New Zealand. Family was especially important to Sandy. In addition to Makenna, Sandy's grandchildren include, Trevor Mullis (Melinda/Martin), and Nathaniel and Victoria Ehlers by son, David, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer. Granddaughters Anna, Allison, and Amy were happily added when son, John Jr., married Carolyn. Granddaughter, Makenna, gave Sandy two great grandsons, Troy and Ryker, and a new grandson-in-law, Robin James. Sadly, Sandy's husband of 46 years, Dr. John Ehlers, lost his battle with cancer in 2007. Sandy is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband, brother, Russell Lyster Jr., and other extended family members. Services for Sandy will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 2 p.m., at the Community Presbyterian Church of Cambria, 2250 Yorkshire Dr, Cambria, CA. By Sandy's request, donations may be made to the church, if desired.
