Curtis Whitekiller

Funeral services for Curtis Whitekiller will be held on Monday, March 12th, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Hulbert High School Gym with Reverend Charles Whitekiller and Reverend Bobby Botts officiating. Curtis will be laid to rest at Keener Cemetery in Lost City. Serving as pallbearers for Curtis includes Brandon Whitekiller, Curtis Mitchell “Sid” Whitekiller, Stanley Washington, Josh Justice, Kevin Walls, and Jacob Sevier. Honorary pallbearer will be Jack Young, Jerry Craig, Jim Combs, Mark Fielden, Matthew Fertig, Charlie Fielden, Randall Shankle, Rhett Shankle, Austin Craig, Jerald Keener, Jake Ellis, Bob Ryals, Bill Jones, Brian Washington, The Barks, The Gifford Brothers, Grandsons, and all fellow coon hunters. Curtis Whitekiller was born at home on 14 mile creek in Lost City, OK, On September 3, 1944, the son of Willie Whitekiller and Linda Glass Whitekiller. He passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, March 5, 2018 at his Lost City home on 14 mile creek, fishing with his grandson. He was 73 years young.

Curtis attended Chilocco Indian School for a brief period before returning to Lost City Elementary. He later attended Hulbert High School excelling in various sports. In 1963, he married his one true love and best friend, Cheryl Cook. To this union, they raised one son, Sid, two daughters, Karla and Katrina and a special grandson, Brandon Joe. Curtis was an “ace” carpenter by trade and he was encouraged and molded this skill to the younger generations. He worked for Lake Region Electric for 17 years before retiring in 2007. A true and avid outdoorsman, Curtis was a one-of-a-kind, mischief makin’, hard core, down to the bone, coon hunter. He was the best of the best, known “nationwide”, Curtis never met a stranger. He raised bluetick hounds, just an all-around houndsman. Curtis was an active board member of the BBCHA and member of the Green Country Coon Hunters Association. Aside from the coon hunting sport and his beloved blueticks, he raised show hogs. His children and grandchildren showed hogs in several livestock shows. To say the least, for 50 plus years, Curtis was an active mentor in the 4-H and FFA Programs. We often laughed that the hogs and dogs ate better than the family did. Curtis loved life and lived it to the fullest each and every day. Any time spent was his adored grandkids was what he loved most. He had his own special way with his babies and he created a bond with them all. Curtis had a very big personality. He could make you laugh or he could make you mad till you seen red! He was a full-blood Cherokee and very proud of his culture. He was a Baptist by faith and leaves a vacancy that is irreplaceable. He and Cheryl shared 55 years of marriage. It has been quoted that God truly broke the mold when this ol’man was born.

Curtis is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Karla, five brothers, two sisters, five nephews and sister-in-law, Bonnie Faye.

Curtis is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, one son, Sid and wife Teresa of Lost City, one daughter, Katrina and husband Mark of Hulbert, a special grandson, BJ and wife Chanyng of Lost City. He has thirteen grandkids, four great-grandkids, one brother, Calvin Whitekiller of Claremore, three special sisters-in-law, Charlene Whitekiller of Neosho, MO, Sharon Kay Foster of Tahlequah, and Carole Whitekiller of Tahlequah, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends and a host of fellow coon-hunters.
