

Betty Jean Roberts Steely, 86, a native of Laurens, South Carolina and 12-year resident of The Villages, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2018. She will be especially remembered as the loving and devoted wife of Herbert Leo Steely of Corbin, Kentucky who passed away in December 2016. Betty and Herb, married for 67 years, were members of the First Christian Church of Wildwood (Disciples of Christ).
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Plato and Mary Roberts and siblings James (“J. P.”), Elmo, Marion, Winston and Wayne and Joyce Roberts Dickerson, all of Laurens.
She is survived by her sons Herbert L. (Chuck) Steely, III who lives with his wife, Toni in Huntsville, Alabama and Bradley Roberts (Brad) Steely, who also lives in The Villages, with his wife, Becky. The Steely’s had three grandchildren, Monica Keen and Jacob Steely of Huntsville and Rachel Steely Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina and eight great grandchildren, Johnathan, McKenzie, Jordan, Hunter, Logan, Abigail, Camden and Lillian.
Of special remembrance, Betty leaves two cousins in The Villages, Freida Scott (John) and David Slade (Joyce). She also leaves three nieces, Martha Steely Wade of Forest, Virginia, Mims Roberts of Charleston and Angela Roberts Love Bell of Marietta, Georgia and three nephews, Kirk Steely (Karen) of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Harold E. (“Dennis”) Dickerson of Laurens and Danny (“Moe”) Roberts (Brenda) of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.
A memorial service is planned for Betty in August in connection with the 79th annual Steely Family reunion in Corbin.
