“My Life from Oct. 5th, 1929
I am Benjamin M Calvo, born in Oct 5, 1929 in Del Valle, Texas.
The Calvo family lived in the country, my father was born in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico and my mother was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico.
I, Benjamin M Calvo, was born in Del Valle, Texas. I am one of six boys and seven girls born to our father and mother.
As a young boy I work in the fields with my brothers hoeing the cotton fields and then as a teenager going to west Texas around Sudan, Texas pulling cotton (picking) around 1700-1800 pounds of cotton earning $36.00 a day in the 1940-1945.
In 1945 my brother Gabriel, Patsy bought a grocery store and I worked in it. I enjoyed working there while I was going to school. I had Sunday’s off.
I work after school until 8 or nine 10 clock Monday – Saturday’s. I enjoyed very much. As I worked I learned to enjoy my job as a grocery salesman
I finished high school in summer of 1950. Coming out of high school I registered in the U.S. Army. You see this was during when Korea was at war
Every male person at the age of nineteen (19) had to register for the U.S. Army which is required by law.
I went to west Texas to pull (pick) cotton with my older brother in September. I had to let U.S. Army know where I was going and how long I was going.
In January 18, 1951 I went into U.S. Army > I went to San Antonio to San Antonio, Texas into the army.
I stayed there for one week then all the young men were sent by train to Camp Cooke in California for four months basic training
After our training we were allowed fifteen days, to going home to see our family. When to time is gone we all came back to San Francisco California by train.
The whole young man were put on a large Boat to go to Japan for more basic training. Then twelve were put on a long boat trip and it took fourteen days to arrive in Japan.
In January 1952 we were sent to Korea to the frontline in the mountains. There was mucho danger. There, my platoon when we went out on patrol two times at night. Then second time we went out there I promised the Lord Jesus Christ I would surrender my life to the Lord Jesus Christ.
When I got out of the army I was still a Presbyterian and saved in my heart. I went out from church to check seeking peace in my heart. Until I went to Four square Church and the second Sunday in August 1953 the Lord Jesus Christ came into my heart by his Spirit. Five months later the Lord Jesus Christ baptized me with the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues. This was a tongue I did not understand. I spoke for more than an hour.
Two young men came from outside and said about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This two men were first passing by the small Church I just felt I wanted to come to this Church in my bike. After the service I went to get my bike and it was gone I didn’t matter to me that bike was stolen, Praise the Lord anyhow!!”
Respectfully yours, Benjamin Munoz CALVO.
