

Virginia Beach – Retired Navy Nurse Corps Reserve Capt. Margaret “Peg” Elizabeth Armstrong, Navy Nurse Corps Reserve, Retired, 72, of Virginia Beach, VA passed away peacefully on May 11, 2012. Born in Detroit, MI to Walter and Adriana Armstrong, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI and a Master of Science degree from the University of California in San Francisco. Capt. Armstrong was commissioned in the Navy Nurse Corps in 1961 and served for 38 years. She served on active duty as a staff nurse at Naval Regional Medical Center, Oakland, CA, as Deputy Director, Navy Nurse Corps for Reserve Affairs, and as Associate Director, Nursing Service at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. She was active in the reserve components of the Nurse Corps filling a variety of positions including Admin Officer, Training Officer, Director Nursing Service, and Commanding Officer in surface, research, medical and hospital ship units. When not on active duty or drilling with the Navy Nurse Corps Reserve, Capt. Armstrong held faculty positions in schools of nursing at the University of Iowa, University of Rochester, and University of Utah, and served as the Director of the Undergraduate Program in the School of Nursing at Old Dominion University (1996-1999).
She was accompanied through life and survived by her sisters, Jane McIntyre, Dorothy Norton, cousin Wilma Raymond, and loving nieces, nephews, friends and shipmates. In heaven, she has joined her parents and her companion in life for 23 years, Juel Ann Loughney.
Gathering for celebration of her life and viewing of video will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, June 22 at The Church of the Holy Family, 1279 North Great Neck Rd., Virginia Beach. A memorial service gathering will be held at same location, Saturday, June 23 at 12 noon followed by a luncheon for all attendees.
Funeral mass will be held at a later date at the Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, Arlington, VA followed by military procession and burial in Arlington National Cemetery with luncheon or reception to follow.
