Monday, March 12, 2018, Peter T. Glakas of Gaithersburg, MD passed away peacefully. He was married to Elizabeth Glakas for more than 67 years and loved her very much. He is survived by his children JoAnn (Gene) Pappalardo, Peter (De) Glakas, and Christopher (Frida) Glakas; his nine grandchildren; Brian, Kristi (Kevin), Paul (Ashley), Jason (Sarah), Christopher (Cori), Michael, Vincent, Taylor, and Victoria and three great-granddaughters Kayla, Lucy, and Thea Rose. Survived by his dear sister Katie Alafoginis and sister-in-law Jean Glakas. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Angela, and siblings John, Jim, Athena, George, and Nick. Peter is also survived by many nieces and nephews from the Glakas, Monaldo, Maroules, Cokenias, Alafoginis, Stratos, and Manis families.
Peter was born and raised in Washington, DC. He attended Eastern High School and later studied music at Peabody Conservatory where he loved to play the trumpet. His musical aspirations were cut short when he joined the US Navy to serve his country alongside his older brothers. After the war he worked with his father for a stint selling fresh produce at the DC Retail Market where he met his wife Betty. They got married June 11, 1950. After his second child was born in 1954, Peter and his brother Nick opened Glakas Bros Produce Company. The company grew into a successful family business with hard work and their determination to be successful. The business afforded Peter things that he loved including his family, golf on the weekends, travel and great food. He shared a lot of what he had with friends and family and would want to be remembered as someone who cared for others along his life’s journey. We are all sad he is gone but happy that he can be with his wife and our mother again.
Services will be at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, Bethesda MD at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 16th. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Peter’s name to St. Jude's Children Hospital or Montgomery Hospice/www.montgomeryhospice.org.
