Irene Armstrong passed away peacefully on May 17th, 2019, at the age of 98. She was born November 5th, 1920 to Gertrude (née Newton) and George Coomby in Toronto, Ontario. She rejoins her parents, husband Bill, and siblings George, Biddy, Ethel and Ruth, in Eternity.
Irene will be deeply missed by her children, Shirley (Vic), Nancy (Dave) and John (Lyne); grandchildren, Suzanne, Mark, Michael, Heather, Paul, Dawn and David; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Alyssa, Jordan, Carter, Nathan, Ben, Natalie, Bethany, Holly, Rachel, Zach, Maddie, Abby, Lindy, Sam, Evie and Lily; brother Bill: and many more family members and friends.
Before her retirement, Irene worked for the Christie Bread Company and the Post Office, and for many years she worked alongside her husband and son in their parts repair business. She was a Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic volunteer. Irene loved bowling and golfing. Watching Blue Jays game used to be the highlight of her day. She enjoyed trips to Florida and to see her daughter Shirley and her family in Kentucky, and her son John and her daughter-in-law Lyne in Vancouver. When she was able to attend Calvary Baptist Church a number of years ago, she enjoyed the friendship and company of the people there.
A celebration of Irene’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 29th, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to the Markham-Stouffville Hospital Foundation (https://www.mshf.on.ca/) or Markhaven Home for Seniors (https://markhavenfoundation.ca/), for the wonderful care Mom was given during her time spent there.
