It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Gladys Marien Antoniuk at the age of 89. Gladys was born May 10, 1929 in Winnipeg Manitoba and passed away December 29, 2018 with family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1996 and parents Michael & Elsie Yallowega. She leaves behind her loving sister, care-giver, & best friend Betty Yallowega, brother Ed (Alyss), sons Larry (Georgina) & David (Sheilagh), grandchildren Jayne (Oliver), Kim (Jorden), Shaun, Duncan (Holly), & Sara, great grandchildren Grace, Weston, Dominic & Ben, niece Lois (Marion), nephews Michael, Garry (Wendy), & Kris and great nieces Maegan and Alix.
Gladys was a good person completely dedicated to & proud of her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was gentle, caring, kind, and smart. She had a quick wit, was an excellent cook, she was good with numbers, easy to talk to, and always offered sound advice when called upon. She loved watching Winnipeg Jets hockey games, Blue Jays baseball, & curling. In addition to raising a family with her husband Steve, Gladys worked outside the home for most of her adult life. She was a bookkeeper by trade and worked at several Winnipeg businesses before moving into health care in the late 60's heading up the first department dedicated to the purchasing and control of hospital supplies, first at Winnipeg General Hospital (now HSC) and then 7 Oaks General Hospital. Gladys is credited with developing and improving many processes and increasing efficiency in the area of ordering and managing of hospital supplies & material thereby freeing up time for nurses to focus on patient care.
Mom and Dad enjoyed camping throughout their lives and after retiring, they enjoyed many winters travelling throughout the southern States in their motorhome. And then after dad passed away in 1996, Mom and Betty spent several winter vacations together in Florida.
Gladys battled many illnesses over the years, including 3 bouts of cancer, spinal stenosis, and other medical conditions that caused considerable pain & impacted her mobility, but she persevered with a strong will to live. She was in constant pain for the past few years so while the family's pain is now just beginning, we are relieved that hers is finally over. Larry and David and their families wish to thank our mother's many caregivers starting first and foremost with her sister and best friend, our Aunt Betty. The committed and loving care she provided to mom is greatly appreciated and certainly extended our mother's life by several years. Thank you Aunt Betty from the bottom of our hearts. We also want to thank Dr. Brent Kvern, Home Care, and the Community Palliative Care Nursing staff for the exceptional care they provided to our mom over the years.
Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday April 24, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home & Cemetery, Hwy #1 East at Navin Rd, Winnipeg MB. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gladys's memory may be made to Siloam Mission, Winnipeg Harvest, CancerCare Manitoba, or charity of choice.
