Hattie Davis Barnes passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2019. She was born November 23, 1920 in Brookhaven, Mississippi to her loving parents Seth Davis and Hattie Bell Lambright Davis.
She attended Alexander High School in Brookhaven, and attended Tougaloo College in Jackson, MI for two years. She convinced her father to go live with her brother in Yakima, with the goal of attending the University of Washington. Unfortunately, she arrived in Yakima too late to begin the school year. During her working years, she attended Yakima Business College for a number of courses.
She married the love of her life Sanford Barnes in 1942. They met in Yakima through her brother Sherman, who was his teammate while both were traveling playing baseball in the Negro League. Sanford preceded her in death in 2000.
Hattie was a very active member of the Masonic Eastern Star in the Yakima area and Northwest Region for over 50 years, rising to role of Grand Worthy Matron for the Northwest Region. She traveled the globe along with her husband, Sanford Barnes, to places such as Japan, Australia, Canada and Israel. She took pride in the organizations mission at heart ‘to provide for the welfare of the wives, daughters, mothers, widows, sisters, and other relatives of Master Masons and is devoted to religious, charitable, and educational purposes’. She supported her late husband Sanford Barnes when he was voted as the Lion District Director for Washington/Idaho region. She also held the title of Lioness, a distinguished position.
The family, along with their sons, Dean and David, were members of the Terrace Heights Presbyterian Church in Yakima since settling in Terrace Heights in 1955. As active members of the church both she and Dad Barnes held positions as a Trustee and Deacon. They also sang in the choir.
Those left to cherish her memory are as follows: her younger sister Ms. Catherine Davis Rance of Joliet, IL; followed by her daughter Yolanda George, sons Dean Barnes and David Barnes; her grandchildren: James George, Gregory George, Camila George, Felicia Reels, Adrianna Petty, Rhonda Quintanilla, Jason Barnes, and Lynnci Barnes; great grandchildren: Elijah George, Kali George, Marley George, Maya George, Zachery George, Ian George, Logan Reels, Isaiah Reels, Jordan Petty, and Jacob Petty; also included, by marriage of Adrianna and Jerry Petty, are NiRae, NyShae, Jerry Jr, and Jaylen Petty; her loving nieces and nephews, Glenda (Patrick) Lee Bigham McGlashan, Eileen Banks, Andre Bigham, Shawn Bigham, Kirby Bigham, Timothy Bigham, Elaine (Davis) King, Mark Davis, Melvin Smith, Pauline Fletcher, Ramona Faye Davis, Sandra Gail Davis, Timothy Davis, Major Walker and Ruby Walker.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Hattie Bell Davis, and 11 siblings: Seth E. Davis, Josephine (Josie) Lee Davis, Sedora Ruby Davis, Edward Sherman Davis, Frances Jeanette Davis, Wilbur Clifton Davis, James Albert Davis, Catherine Davis, Eula Elaine Davis, Lawrence Burnell Davis, Marion Leora Davis (Bigham).
Saturday, June 8, 2019:
Burial Services will be held at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, 3001 Terrace Heights Drive, Yakima, Washington 98901 at 11:00 am.
Celebration of life services will take place at Rainier Memorial Center, 2807 Terrace Heights Drive, Yakima, Washington 98901 at 12 noon.
