History

The Fortin Group manages 2 funeral home locations in Lewiston and Auburn, Maine. For more than 100 years, our funeral and cremation services have provided peace and comfort to families in Androscoggin County.

In the beginning

In the early 1900s, families began transitioning from having undertaking services and embalming take place in the home to utilizing funeral homes for these services. In 1925, Reginald Fortin became an owner at Poisson and Fortin Funeral Home on Park Street in Lewiston. When Fortin Sr. died, his sons, Donat and Roland G. Fortin, established their funeral home, known then as Fortin Funeral Directors, at its existing location at 70 Horton Street in Lewiston.

In 1975, Roland G. Fortin sold his interest to existing shareholders Raymond Duprez, Denis Croteau and Roger Bouffard. In 1985, Raymond A. Perreault also became a shareholder in Fortin Funeral Directors.

Providing better funeral care

In 1992, Fortin Funeral Directors merged with Plummer and Merrill and Teague Funeral Homes. The name of the business changed to The Fortin Group of Lewiston and Auburn, offering a choice of locations to our families in both Lewiston and Auburn.

Always trying to keep our community's need in mind, The Fortin Group underwent several renovations to the existing funeral home. A major renovation in 1963 incorporated a parking lot, more spacious parlors for visitations and the comfort of air conditioning. Another renovation in 2008 restored many of the Lewiston funeral home's original architectural details and created a Celebration of Life center—a full-service meeting and banquet room with multimedia capabilities.

Although much has changed, we have always remained committed to serving the Twin Cities area and hope to continue our legacy for many more years.
