W. Richard Wise

W Richard “Dick” Wise 93, of Indianapolis, passed away April 22, 2019. He was born in Indianapolis, to Curtis and Oneita Wise. He graduated in 1944 from Beech Grove High School. He was an Army Air Corp Aviation Cadet during WWII. While home on leave in 1945 he married Helen J. Miller, also of Beech Grove, at Fort Benjamin Harrison. After leaving military service, Dick attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He later became a lifelong member of the Plumbers & Steamfitter Local 440, typically working as Superintendent of Installation for industrial refrigeration projects. He received many awards recognizing his excellent work. He was civically engaged as a founding member of the Beech Grove chapter of the Jaycees, including a period as a vice president. In his free time, he enjoyed participating, especially with his children and grandchildren, in a variety of athletic activities including ice skating, water skiing, golf and snow skiing. The latter two he enjoyed well into his eighties. Dick is survived by a loving family including his wife of 73 years, Helen Jean, five children Barbara Compton, Carol (Hank) Vera, Joann (Rick) Farris, Richard (Nancy) Wise, and Laura (Greg) Wise-Ewing as well as 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Olive Jean Boone and brother Charles Wise Visitation will be Saturday, April 27 from 11:30 am – 2 pm at Little and Sons Beech Grove Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 3 pm at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorials in Dick's name may be made to Humane Society and the Salvation Army.
