Obituary of Elizabeth (Betty) Vanchik
Elizabeth (Betty) Mary Vanchik (nee Jakubcsik) It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Betty surrounded by her family on February 3, 2019, at Tall Pines Long Term Care Centre in Brampton having recently celebrated her 94th birthday. She has already joined her loving husband, George, with whom she shared fifty-six years of marriage and who died in 1999. Beloved Mother to Betty (Frank) Tamas; Grandmother to Matthew (Misha) and Philip (Julie); Great Grandmother to Skylar, Taiya, Ashton and Felix and Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brother, Bill Jakubcsik (Erika) and survived by her sister Helen Kun (Steve) and her sister-in-laws Helen Arva (late Emil) and Erika. She will be greatly missed by her friend of over twenty years, Richard Bean. Their visits to the mall and card playing were well-known to all. In the later years, Richard became Betty's sous chef helping her make cabbage rolls and other Hungarian dishes. Betty was a member of the Catholic Women's League for over fifty years and received her pin marking the occasion at a ceremony at St. Basil's Church. She was employed by Burtol Cleaners and New Swan Cleaners where her speciality was pressing pleated garments. Both she and George were long-time members of the Hungarian Hall and received a plaque commemorating their service to the Hungarian Mutual Benefit Society. She was a gardener extraordinaire. Anything she touched grew and blossomed to bear fruit. Her love of cooking and baking was especially appreciated by her family and friends. As an expert seamstress, Betty created wardrobes for her mother and daughter. She was undeterred in her enthusiasm for making everyone smile and laugh. Betty (aka Nana) was fortunate to have many cherished friendships that spanned the years and she greatly valued her time with everyone. The family will receive friends at the “Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home and Chapel” 96 West Street on Friday February 8th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Basil’s Church, 50 Palace Street on Saturday February 9th at 10:00 am. Interment St. Joseph’s Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, Mass intentions from St. Basil’s Church or donations to the Brant Community Health Care Foundation would be appreciated.
