Obituary of Clifden Alexander Berg
It is our family’s great sadness that we share with you the passing of our beloved Dad, who peacefully slipped away with family by his side, of complications due to Alzheimer’s. He is on his way back to the farmhouse and walking in the wheat fields once more. Born in Midale, Saskatchewan to Florence and Rueben, Clifden (Denny) grew up in and around small town Saskatchewan including Estevan, Hitchcock, Midale, Macoun and Weyburn amongst many cousins and aunts and uncles. He attended the University of Saskatchewan where he completed a B.Sc in geological engineering in 1951 and a M.Sc in geology 1953 and was a lifetime member of APEGGA. He started his geological career in Virden, Manitoba, moved to Regina, Saskatchewan and continued to Calgary where he started a consulting firm, Geotechnical Consultants, and then an oil and gas exploration company, Mountcliff Resources Ltd. He discovered gas fields in northern British Columbia, oil fields in Manitoba and several different fields in between. He had worked for Chevron, Graham-Michealis and was appointed General Manager of Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Corp. (Saskoil). Clif was a very active member of Highwood Lutheran Church in Calgary and had many friends and associates. He was an integral part of the building of the Church and was an Elder. He also sat on the Board of Advisors for the ELCC prior to the merger with the LCA which became the ELCIC. He sat on the Board of Directors for Camrose Lutheran College for a number of years in the late ‘70s and worked closely with President Pastor Glen Johnson. Later he was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church. He is survived by daughters Jo-Ann Schwartz (Rick) of Ottawa and Cynthia Meakin of Calgary; his son Gordon of Victoria; grandchildren Erik Peach, Nadia Schwartz, Blaine Meakin and Connor Meakin; his brothers Larry Berg and Robert Berg; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Clif was predeceased by sister Ann (Berg) Haigh; mother Florence (Thorson) Berg; father Rueben Berg; and his daughter Roberta (Berg) Peach. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Fabreau and to the nurses and staff on Unit 39 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for making Dad’s last days comfortable. Also, to the wonderful staff at Bethany Riverview for such compassion and kindness, thank you so very much. You are all angels.
