Obituary of Owen Giebelhaus
Laurel Owen Giebelhaus passed away suddenly but peacefully at the Bethany Riverview on May 11, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Owen is survived by wife Leonora; son Allen (Karen); daughter Jan Guy (Allen Schultz); three grandsons James, Scott and Matthew Giebelhaus; granddaughter Michelle Mericle (Kevin McLaughlin); two great-grandchildren Addison and Jackson Mericle; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his sisters Gwen Jones and Ada Mason of Mesa, Arizona, and sister-in-law Marie Giebelhaus of Red Deer, AB. Owen was predeceased by his parents Conrad and Margaretta and brothers Donald and Garry. Born at Vegreville Hospital on August 18, 1929. He was raised on the farm, south of Vegreville and attended Ideal School and Vegreville High School. He moved to Edmonton in 1949. In 1953 he married Leonora Lae and during the next few years they raised their two children in the Holyrood District. Owen worked for Imperial Oil, The Good Samaritan Society and various other health care facilities in Edmonton, Red Deer and Grande Prairie, as an Administrator or in Accounting. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working in his workshop or on the computer. After heart surgery in 2011, Owen and Leonora decided to move to Calgary to be closer to family and have been happy to live at Sundance on the Green. For the last six months, he resided at Bethany Riverview. Throughout the years, Owen’s faith and being part of a church family, wherever he lived had always been so important to him. A Visitation will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate) on Friday, May 17, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, (14640 6 St SW), on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Owen’s memory directly to the Peace Lutheran Church, (14640 6 St SW, Calgary, AB T2Y 0E1).
