Brian William Orsted

Brian William Orsted, late of Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan passed away unexpectedly in Mazatlan, Mexico on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the age of 59 years. Brian was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, May 26, 1959 to Bill & Shirley Orsted, a little brother to Wayne. In the following four years, Dale & Bob were added to what forever would be known as 'The Orsted Boys'. Soon after Dale was born the family moved to Estevan when Bill opened the Orsted Funeral Home and Shirley pursued her career as a long term school teacher. Brian spent most of his early years enjoying life in downtown Estevan - playing games like 'kick the can', tag and whatever the imagination of the many kids living on 3rd street could create. He loved riding his bike for hours and hours searching for the next adventure with his two block restriction. Brian attended Westview School, Estevan Junior High and graduated from the Estevan Comprehensive School. Brian was an excellent athlete and loved to partake in as many sports as possible. He had a great many friends but not one enemy. Not only was Brian an excellent athlete, he was a hard working student and achieved excellent school marks. During high school, Brian and a few of his best friends started a little rock band with Brian playing the drums. The band performing all around Estevan and area, playing various dances would later take their show on the road and became one of the best cover bands in western Canada travelling endless miles playing bar after bar, night after night. With a little pressure from his mom & grandpa Floyd, Brian enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a geography degree, studying weather and climatology - hense his obsession with the weather. Following his university graduation he took this hard earned knowledge and went back on the road with his band mates. After two years on the road it was time for another challenge. In September 1981 Brian enrolled at the Trebas Institute of Recording Arts in Montreal. He graduated two years later with his Certificate In Recording Studio Engineering. Brian would also help set-up the stage and P.A. equipment for many professional groups performing at the Montreal Spectrum and other venues in the Montreal area. While attending Trebas Brian was awarded the second year entrance scholarship, awarded to the one student with the highest marks during the first year. Following his graduation with honours at Trebas, Brian became a freelance recording engineer and purchased his own home studio equipment. Brian went on the road in 1983 for another year as the sound tech for the Estevan band, Head First. From January 1987 until April 1991 Brian was employed at the Studio West Canada Ltd Recording Studio in Saskatoon. Not only did he record and mix music for C.D.'s and cassette tape releases, he mixed radio and television jingles. He also taught recording engineering in the Studio West Recording Arts Program. One of his proudest projects was recording and mixing of "The Northern Pikes - Snow in June" debut album which included "She Ain't Pretty". He proudly hung his platinum record in his office. From 1991 until February 1993, Brian worked at Calgary Soundworks as their chief engineer. He also continued teaching recording engineering in the Soundworks Recording Arts Program. The studio in Calgary was sold in 1993 and Brians position was filled by the new owner. Brian returned to Kenosee Lake that following summer for a well deserved break and soon found himself General Manager of his brother Dale's business, The Moose Head Inn. For years, when the Moose Head closed for the winter season, Brian would head to Mazatlan, Mexico in January, returning near the end of March to get the Moose Head ready for another season. Brian is remembered by his father, Bill; brothers, Wayne, Dale (Nelly), Bob; nieces & nephews, Michelle & Shaun (Laurel), Amanda, Alan & Julianne; great nieces & nephews, Austin, Jaxson, Kruze & Jovie. Predeceased by his mother, Shirley. He is also remembered by his many friends here and in Mazatlan. Funeral Service: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 26 from the Church of Christ, Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan with Reverend Michelle Moore officiating. Interment in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn, Saskatchewan Arrangements in care of the Orsted Funeral Home (Carlyle)
