Obituary of Mason Wayne Van Tassell
Mason Wayne Van Tassell – Age 74 of Hillgrove, Digby Co., passed away peacefully February 26, 2018 in Digby General Hospital. Born in Digby, he was a son of the late Calvin Oscar and Margaret Janet (Amero) Van Tassell. Mason worked over 30 year as a forest technician with Department of Natural Resources. He was an active member of the community throughout his life. Mason was a volunteer fire fighter with various departments in Digby County; he was past president of Digby East Fish and Game; past president of Digby Search and Rescue; a 15 year Auxiliary member of RCMP; a member of Fundy Amateur Radio Club; on community health boards in Digby and Yarmouth, a board member of Tideview Terrace and was very involved with the Liberal Party. Over the years, he was involved with Digby Municipal Airport where he took flying lessons and had his own ultralight; he spent time on the ham radio, hunting, watching war movies and later in life Mason and Annette enjoyed travelling to the various craft events and making rapure for their home business “Annette’s Rapure”. Mason is survived by wife, Annette Marie (Belliveau) Van Tassell; daughter, Denise (Mike) McCleave, Berwick; son, Jamie Van Tassell, Bear River; daughter in-law, Sara Van Tassell; grandchildren, Karley McCleave, Michelle McCleave, Ryan Van Tassell, Melanie Van Tassell, Jodie VanTassell; great-grandson Brooks; sister, Joan Whynott, Calgary; brothers, Calvin “Skip” (Shirley); Doug (Garnita), Saskatchewan; Jim (Lois) Alberta; also many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mason was predeceased by sisters, Evelyn Taylor, Addie Van Tassell, Diane Wentzell and brother, David Van Tassell. Cremation has taken place under the care of Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby. A gathering for family and friends will be held upstairs at the Digby Fire Hall on March 4th from 2 pm to 4pm. The family has requested no flowers and instead if you wish, make a donation in memory of Mason to: Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a Fire Department in Digby County.
