Obituary of Dorothy Dean Fitzner

IN THE CARE OF

JA Snow Funeral Home

The family of Dorothy Dean Fitzner sadly announces her passing, in hospital, in the early hours of October 29th, 2018. Dorothy was born in the Village of Milton, Queens County, Nova Scotia, on January 28th, 1924, the youngest child of John C. Cole and Matilda Cole (nee McKenna). Hers was a happy, if humble, childhood, with loving parents and older siblings she held dear throughout their long lives. After high school Dorothy worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Liverpool, until she captured the eye of the young resident engineer, Robert Fitzner, who became her husband of 66 years, until his passing in 2015. Dorothy was also predeceased by her sister, Virginia Hawkins, of Devon, Alberta, and brother, Ronald Cole, of Milton, Nova Scotia. She is survived by her four children: Janet Boyle (Dr. Thomas Boyle), Robert Fitzner, Joan Hobrecker (Paul Hobrecker), and Karen Fitzner; her four grandchildren, Kerry Woodley (David Woodley), Leigh Fitzner-LeBlanc (Christine Walkowicz), Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc (Anne Marie Houlihan), and Mars Hobrecker (Coco Romack); and, her six great-grandchildren, Hazel, Greta, Oona and Wilma Woodley, Owen and Abigail Fitzner-LeBlanc. Dorothy also leaves behind her two sisters-in-law, Evelyn MacArthur and Teresa Fitzner, and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was an avid reader, sports fan, and was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. She was a wonderful homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Saturday morning coffee and muffins was a family tradition through three generations until her move to Parkland in July. Dorothy was a strong spirited, determined and sensitive woman who cared fully and thought deeply about the people in her life. Beyond treasuring her as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, our mother was to each of us, a dear and trusted friend. Dorothy’s family would like to thank her doctor and the staff at Bradford Hall, for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday November 1, 2018 at 10:00 am at St . Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Rd, Halifax, NS.
