Obituary of Garfield "Skip" Michael Collier
COLLIER, Garfield Michael “Skip” It is with great sadness, the family of Garfield Michael “Skip” Collier, announces his passing at Willow Hall, Dartmouth on March 7, 2018 at the age of 75. Born in Halifax, he was the only son of the late Captain Garfield and Cedella Collier. Skip will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Helen (Wells) and his 5 children; Michael (Julie) Collier, Paula (David) Carter, Heather (Ernie) Collier-Sampson, Susan Collier and Kimberley (Kyle) MacRoberts; also 13 grandchildren, Craig (Noma) Collier, Justin Collier, Amanda, Devyn and Haley Carter, Jessica (Aaron) Quinn, Brittany and Lauren Sampson, Cydney and Cassey Prime, Alicia, Conor, and Liam McVarnock, and 3 great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Hailey Collier-Drake and Ella Grace Quinn. Skip is also survived by brother-in-law, Neil Brodie, sisters-in-law, Georgina Scott, Colleen (Robert) Burgess, and Linda Coolen, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only sister, Florence Collier (Brodie). Skip was a proud North ender working many years with Prudential Insurance Company of America, then proceeded with a career in promotional advertising with Atlantic Nova Specialty Advertising, Talbot, and eventually starting his own business, Collier Promotional Products Ltd. for over 25 years. His love for fishing, RV’ing, Classic Cars and most of all people, led him to serving on the board of numerous organizations, such as The Good Sams Club and Cumberland Good Sams Campers, and the Nova Scotia Salmon Association. One of his pride and joy was the Classic Chevy Club of Nova Scotia which he along with his dear friend Gary Porter founded in February of 1981. In 2016, Skip was inducted into the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame for his competitive drag racing in the early 1960’s. Although he had a soft spot for 55-57 Chevy’s his proudest project was the restoration of his 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible, prior to his illness. Visitation will take place Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2-4 and 6-8 pm in Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral service will take place Monday, March 12 at 11 am in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 3751 Robie Street, Halifax, with Rev. Canon Bull officiating. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Burial in Oakridge Memorial Gardens, Lower Sackville. Family flowers only Please!
