John Glassford Couban

John Glassford Couban, 82, of Prospect Bay and Halifax died at home on January 2, 2019. Born in Manchester, England on October 5, 1936, he attended various schools including the Salesian College, Farnborough. After a brief stint in the British air force, he held a number of jobs including selling Encyclopedia Britannica across Europe. He met and married his wife in Athens, Greece in 1960 and they were together for 58 years. They emigrated to England and later to Canada. Most of his career was as a sales engineer with Drew Chemical in London, England and Halifax. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen Joseph Couban and Lillias Margaret Couban (nee Glassford), his brother Robert Stephen, his mother-in-law, Stella Ponga and his son-in-law, James David Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Paraskevi (Vivi) Couban (nee Ponga), his children Stephen and Stella, his son-in-law Bruce Mellon, his dear grandchildren Josey and Axl, his sister-in-law Jean Couban and his nieces and nephew, Rebecca, Rachel, Bridget and Jonathan. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr Harris Crooks, his family physician for more than 40 years, the doctors and nurses of the Dialysis Program and especially Rosemary Quinton a.k.a Ro-Ro for her tireless and devoted care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dialysis Program at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. A visitation will be held at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street from 6 to 8pm on Monday January 7th, 2019. The funeral will be at St. Joseph’s Church, 3709 Prospect Road, Shad Bay on Tuesday January 8th, 2019 at 11am with reception to follow.
