IN THE CARE OF
Markey-Dermody Funeral Home
With heavy hearts we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Alois in his 85th year on Friday February 8, 2019. Beloved husband of Verica of 54 years.
Devoted father of Monica (Shawn), Frank (Nathalie), Tommy and Lori (Chris). Cherished Ata of Austin, Nikolas, Morgan, Tristan, Jeremy, Vanessa, Dean and Kyle.
Alois was born in Prekmurje, Slovenia and moved to Canada in 1955 at the age of 21. He crossed the Atlantic with a few dollars and a name in his pocket and made Canada his new home. Upon arrival, Alois lived in Alberta where he worked in farming, construction and carpentry trades. He eventually settled in Beamsville, Ontario with his wife Verica and family and established Sampl’s Fruit Farm. Together they grew some of Niagara’s finest peaches for 36 years. Alois was a skilled craftsman and had a love for farming, gardening, building, playing his button box accordion, and watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He was very involved in the local Slovenian community and was an active member of Bled Club and St. Gregory the Great Church. He was proud of his Slovenian heritage and he was a proud Canadian. Most of all, he loved his wife and his family. He will be greatly missed and leaves a strong legacy.
Friends will be received at the MARKEY-DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton on Wednesday, February 13th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with Vigil Prayers at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church, 125 Centennial Pkwy N, Hamilton on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Our Lady of The Angels Cemetery.
