Dr. Garnet Barrie Leckie Dec. 5, 1928 - Nov. 4, 2018 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dr. Garnet Barrie Leckie on November 4th, 2018 in the comfort of his own home surrounded by family. Garnet Barrie Leckie was born in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan on December 5th, 1928. He grew up on the prairies, and they were always prominent in his stories and in his heart. Barrie earned an Arts Degree and a Pharmacy Degree at the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon. He worked as a Pharmacist and then decided, like his father, that his calling was to pursue medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba and took his oath in Medicine in 1958. He served the community of Kenora as a Pharmacist and then as a General Practitioner for nearly 40 years. He dedicated his life to caring for each and every one of his patients, making house calls, delivering babies, healing and guiding them through life and death. In addition to his practise at the Lake of the Woods clinic, and Lake of the Woods Hospital, Dr. Leckie worked as a coroner for many years — investigating deaths and helping to propose guidelines that made our community a safer place for all. He worked as a doctor for the Kenora Jail towards the end of his career, serving the community in the way he knew best — healing. Over the years, the friendships he made both as a doctor and in the golf and curling communities sustained him immensely. He was a member of the Beauty Bay Golf Club and the Keewatin Curling Club for many years. Anyone who knew him knew his sense of humour and knew he always strove for excellence in everything he did. He was a loving husband and father — supportive of his 3 daughters in every way. Coming from a family of 3 boys, he always found it funny that he had 3 daughters and 7 granddaughters. His first great grandchild is a boy. The love and support was always there, for each and every one. His love of nature, first as a prairie boy, and then as a resident of Kenora, was evident and passed down to his children. The family camp on Dogtooth brought him peace and relaxation — a place to watch this area's beauty unfold. He taught his girls to respect and appreciate nature. He was a dedicated professional and a loyal friend. He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Donalda; his brother Bruce (Joy); sister- in-law Edna Godkin; his daughters Brenda (Steve) Herdman, Nancy (Tim) Bonds, Barb (Rick) Lindquist; 7 granddaughters, Chelsea (Gabriel), Jennifer; Stephanie, Michelle (Thor), Christine; Laura, Kyla; great grandson Aiden as well as numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents George and Edith Leckie, his brother Newton Leckie, brother- in- law John Godkin and sister- in- law Betty (Doug) Sagi. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. As per his wishes, a private family prayer service has been held. Barrie would want you to remember him in your own quiet way and always be mindful of the needs of others.
