Barbara Powell Davenport

White House, Tennessee resident Barbara P. Davenport went to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. She was 86 years old. She was born on October 18, 1932 in Craven County, NC to Leroy and Mattie Powell. In 1950, she married Horace Davenport and they began raising their family of four children in Deep Run, NC. As her husband ran the family grocery across the street, she focused on the family. While she assisted as a clerk at the store from time to time, she relished her role as a full-time homemaker. She loved growing flowers and vegetables, which she would can and freeze all summer to help feed the entire family throughout the entire year. While in Deep Run, Barbara served at Deep Run Baptist Church as Choir Director, pianist and soloist, where she was known for her beautiful soprano voice. In the early 1970’s, she and Horace took the family to Charlotte, NC for a couple of years, before settling in Nashville, Tennessee where Horace, along with his son Neal, pursued a career in music. A wonderful seamstress, she would make and alter clothes for the family and once in Nashville, used her skills to alter stage costumes for country music artists like Tommy Cash and Hank Williams, Jr. She was a lover of Jesus, faithful church attendant and prayer warrior. She was an amazing wife and mother, and her life was dedicated to her two passions, her family and faith. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Mattie Powell, her sisters, Ruby McCoy, Faye Fields and Maxine Muth, and grandson Jeremy. She is survived by her son, Neal Davenport (Cheri), daughter Ann Ghianni (Eric), son Matt Davenport (Victoria) and daughter Ginger DeFillipo (Vinny), eleven grandchildren, Ben (Jill), Beth (Dustin), Jen, Liz, Maria (Michael), Ana (Josh), Matthew (Lindsay), Jonathan, Hannah (Kyle), Gina, and Michael as well as two great-grandchildren, Kendall and Cash and sister-in-law, Delia Perkins and brother-in-law, Morris Rigsby and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held in the Nashville Room at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home from 9:30-11:30A, Saturday, October 5, 2019. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will take place immediately following in the chapel on site, which will then be followed by a private family graveside service in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
