Paul Samuel Redelheim

Paul Samuel Redelheim was born July 6, 1945 in Coral Gables, Florida. He was raised and educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a proud graduate of Class 220 from Central High School, and received his B.A. and M.Ed from Temple University. He received his Ed.D degree from the University of Georgia. Before coming to Vanderbilt University, he taught at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1976 he joined the faculty of Peabody College where he was an Assistant Professor of Special Education, and Director of Special Education student teaching. In 1981, he was awarded the Chancellor’s Cup which is an annual honor given to the faculty member making the greatest contribution outside the classroom to undergraduate student-faculty relationships. Because he was so instrumental in facilitating the merger between Peabody College and Vanderbilt University, he became the only non-Vanderbilt faculty member to receive this prestigious award. Later in his career, Dr. Redelheim specialized in Quality Improvement and worked for HCA, and St. Thomas Hospital. He retired from Vanderbilt University Hospital in 2006. Dr. Redelheim died at home, surrounded by loving family and friends on February 7, 2018 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his mother, Phyliss Redelheim of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his wife Carol (Hassenstein) Redelheim of Nashville; son Seth (Nicole) Redelheim, and grandson Samuel Redelheim of Atlanta, Georgia, daughter Alison (Justin) Atwood of Nashville; step daughter Molly Baringer, step-son Rob Baringer, both of Nashville; brothers David (Joan) Redelheim, of Delray Beach Florida, and Daniel (Nora) Redelheim, of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Dr. Redelheim was predeceased by his father Phillip Redelheim and his brother Jonathan Redelheim. Services will be held at Congregation Micah on Tuesday February 13, 2018 at 3:15.
