Obituary of Helena Fowler
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Helena (Helen) Fowler at St. Paul’s Hospital Sept. 20, 2018. Helen’s ancestors came to Canada under the Mennonite Treaty of 1873. Helen was the oldest of seven children of Mary and Peter Bartsch. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Mary, her brothers Peter and John and her beloved husband Kenneth Frank Roger Fowler. Helen was part of the early 1930’s Northern Resettlement Program in which farm families of the southern areas of the province were resettled to the northern forest fringe area. Helen’s extended family moved to Mayfair, SK., with her grandfather Cornelius Giesbrecht (1880 – 1959) leading the group. They came back to the Hague area of SK. in 1944. As a teenager and young adult, Helen moved to Saskatoon and worked at the Presbyterian Residence, which used to be located on Spadina Cres. Helen also worked at the Sanitorium and other places in Saskatoon. Like others at the time Helen used these jobs to buy her parents and siblings items. On July 5th, 1955 she married Kenneth. In the 1970’s Ken and Helen were active in the Faith Baptist Church. They were also part of CARG group (Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group) at the Field House for many years. Helen was happy to be in the day program of the Saskatoon Convalescent House and later she became a resident at the Sherbrooke Community Centre. Helen is survived by her son Rick, daughter Prof. Deborah R. Fowler; her grandchildren Mary and Eric Aupperle; her sister Eva (Dave) Harder; brothers Neil (Mary) Bartsch and Jae (Doreen) Bartsch and her brother-in-law John (Anne) Braun. The family wishes to thank caregivers, nurses and staff of the Sherbrooke Community Centre.
