Patricia Maureen Skala

February 19, 1959August 24, 2019

Patricia Maureen Skala, 60, of South Dennis, died peacefully on Aug. 24 surrounded by her loving family and close friends after a courageous 20-month battle with melanoma.

Patti, as she was known to family and friends, grew up in Springfield, MA, the 13th of Henry and Rita Skala’s 15 children. She attended Catholic schools in Springfield, graduating from Notre Dame Academy. Patti was an excellent athlete, having played both softball and soccer in several community leagues- earning the title of “Big Bopper” because she could belt homeruns. She worked for several years at Massachusetts Mutual Life in Springfield.

She spent many happy family vacations on Cape Cod before moving to South Dennis full-time in the mid- 1980s. In 1988, Patti went to work for the Dennis Police Department (DPD) as a full-time data clerk. In 2003, she was promoted to Senior Account Assistant. At her retirement in February, she received a citation for her 30 years of service. She was recognized for “her contribution to emergency operations at the department during Hurricane Bob and for her years of volunteer time to support the Dennis Police Department and the citizens of Dennis.” In the DPD, Patti found a second, very large family. She loved her work at the department and enjoyed the banter with the police officers, dishing it out as much as she got. Her family is forever grateful for the love and support shown to Patti from everyone at Dennis Police.

In addition to cherished time spent with her large, extended family, Patti had a love-hate relationship with the Red Sox and loved the Patriots. She took several memorable trips with family to see the Red Sox play in Baltimore and Toronto. She also cherished her beloved dog Scully.

Patti is survived by her 14 loving siblings: James of West Yarmouth; Joan Maestrone of East Longmeadow; Thomas (Rachel) of Narraganset, RI ; Timothy (Kathleen) of Ogonquit, ME; Kathleen Martin (Michael) of Agawam; Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X., of Westwood; Christine of Longmeadow; Eileen Mendes (Arthur) of South Dennis; Henry (Marianne) of East Longmeadow; Joseph (Renee) of Yarmouthport; Stephen ( Maria) of Agawam; Margaret of Longmeadow; Peter of South Dennis; and Mark (Kelly) of Hyannis. Patti is also survived by many devoted nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Rita (Finn) Skala, as well as her brother in law, Eugene Maestrone, and sister in law, Carol Skala.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 from 3-7 pm at Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 729 MA-134, South Dennis, MA 02660. Gathering will be held on Wednesday August 28th from 9:30 -10:30 at Doane Beal and Ames, followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of The Cape, 468 Stony Brook Road, Brewster, MA, 02631 at 11 am.

A graveside burial service will be held at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Springfield, on a date to be announced. Donations in Patti’s memory may be made to the Dennis Police Relief Association, P.O. To all the Skala Family,
My deepest love and sympathy to all of you on the loss of your sister Patty. She will be waiting to greet all her brothers and sisters in our heavenly home someday.
My Hope is that the Skala and O’Shaughnessy family and all are old neighbors will have a glorious reunion up there someday.
I remember when my mother use to complain about her many chores etc. , I would yell “Well what about Mrs. Skala? She has 15 children and you only have 5 children to worry about. She would give me a dirty look and say “yes but she has Aunt Betty to help her and bring in all the finished ironing on a broomstick every week.”
We were so lucky to have you all there , talking to each other while holding on to your chainlink fence. Patty was one of the Skala family who used to jump that fence and I always wished I could.

God bless each of you during this difficult time. You are in my heart and prayers.

My deepest sympathy to all the Skala families. My fondest memories of Patty as a young girl playing with my children on Euclid Ave. in the yard in Springfield.
Our memories of your beautiful family living in the house directly behind us will always bring joy to all the Oshaughnessy family.

Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Christine and Family
Saw the passing of your sister in the paper, and I wanted to offer my condolences. I don’t think I ever met your sister, but I have very fond memories of the family, your friendship and working with you and your sister Joan at the phone company.

My sincere condolences to the Skala family. I worked with Patti several years ago at Mass Mutual. She was such an easy going person and we had many good times at the agency with her. I am so glad that I was able to spend an afternoon with her last summer at her home talking about old times. May she Rest In Peace.

I am so, so, sorry to read about the passing of Patti and the grief that your family is going through. I not only had the pleasure of growing up with her and your awesome family but I also worked with her at Monarch Life Insurance Company. We had many a good time during and after work. I often run into Bill Cullinan, another one of Pat's insurance co-workers and one time boyfriend, at the Big Y in E.L. When our conversation turns to work, we reminisce about the great times at Monarch to which Patti played a huge part. You have always been a wonderful family who i admire. I cherish each and every moment of my childhood, living next door to you. I always wished that I could be your number 16 sister. I loved Pat and love all of you!!!! I am so sad that you have lost a sister and will certainly keep you, as you have always been, in my heart. Carol Tetreault Crowe
