Obituary of William Perry Metheny Jr.
William Perry Metheny, Jr, died May 31, 2019, after courageously battling lung cancer and lymphomas for many years. He was born June 2, 1944, in La Plata, Maryland, and grew up in Camden, Delaware, graduating from Caesar Rodney High School in 1962. He then joined the United States Marine Corps, serving on active duty and in the Reserves for 32 years, including a tour in Vietnam. After his active duty military service, he joined the Prince William County Police Department and served honorably for 25 years. While raising his children, he served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader, as well as actively supporting the Girl Scout Troop led by his wife. Bill was a member of the John A. Lejeune Masonic Lodge Number 350, in Quantico, and served as Grand Master in 1975. He was a founding board member of the Prince William County Retired Police Officers Association. He was also a Trustee of the Prince William County Supplemental Plan for Police Officers and Uniformed Fire and Rescue Personnel. At his church he founded a cancer support group and walked with and led others prayerfully on their cancer journey. Preceding Bill in death were his first wife Bonnie Patterson Metheny, his parents William P. and Elsie Metheny, and brother Eugene Metheny. He leaves his wife Donna, son William P. (Lori) Metheny, III, daughters Colleen (Tim) Painter, Cathy (Scott) Fillis, and stepsons William Humphreys and Jeff (Shelagh) Humphreys. He is also the grandfather of William P. Metheny, IV, Hannah and Lane Metheny, Amanda Flick, Katie Freeman, Rebecca Painter, Ryan Fillis, Sarah, Jenna and Dana Humphreys, and 2 great grandsons – Jon Freeman and William P. Metheny, V. Along with his sister Carole (Robert) Campbell and brother Robert (Linda) Metheny and several nephews and nieces. Bill enjoyed singing in several church choirs, most recently at Ebenezer UMC in Stafford, where he was a member, as well as with the Rappahannock Choral Society for several years. He was known for his love of gardening and his talent in woodworking, completing many beautiful projects, including cherished cradles for his grandchildren. Always the jokester, family and friends knew to expect the unexpected from him. Bill loved to care for and serve others, to spend time meditating on God’s word, and trusted the faithfulness of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Visitation will be at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home, 186 Shelton Shop Road, Stafford, Virginia on Friday, June 7, 6:00-8:00 pm. A memorial service celebrating Bill’s life is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 161 Embrey Mill Road, Stafford, Virginia at 10:00 am, followed by a private interment. A reception will immediately follow the memorial service in the Gathering Room of the church.
