Obituary of Gerardus "Gorgeous George" Jacobus Kuyer
Gerardus (George) Jacobus Kuyer, passed away in the early morning of Wednesday June 19, at Peace Arch Hospital Hospice, at the age of 94, after a valiant struggle with cancer. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 61 years, Gerardina (Dianne) Kuyer and survived by his devoted partner of 7 years, Gladys Landsiedel, his 5 children Jack (Diana), Joyce (Jerry), Marion (Ed), Wayne (Susan) and Donna (Randy), his 15 grand children and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as extended family in Holland. In his last days he was surrounded by his family and loved ones. George was born January 27, 1925, in Amsterdam Holland, the middle of 3 children. He began an apprenticeship as a baker at the tender age of 13. He met his wife Dianne, and they married in Amsterdam on September 24, 1947. In 1954 they immigrated to Canada. Within a few years of moving to Canada, George opened the first of several bakeries. The Valley Bakery is well known in the Vancouver area and continues to be operated by his son Jack. George had a huge personality, with a great sense of humour. He loved to laugh, and people were drawn to his zest for life. He will be missed, but his legacy carries on. His Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday June 25, at 11:00 am at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 – 28th Avenue, Surrey, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peace Arch Hospice Society, 15435 16A Ave, Surrey, BC V4A 1T2 , The Canadian Cancer Society, 565 W 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4J4 or The Vancouver Children’s Hospital, 4480 Oak Street, Vancouver .
