Joan Catherine Chiasson

We, the family of Joan Catherine Chiasson, age 88, are heartbroken to announce her passing on Sunday, April 7, 2019 with her family by her side. Joan was the only daughter of Bernard and Anna (MacKinnon) Currie, both of Glace Bay. Joan was known as a warm, intelligent, and caring woman. She was proud of her family, devoted to her faith, and a leader in her community. In 2011 she was honoured as the recipient of the Bellelle Guerin Award, a rare honour given to those women who have dedicated themselves to the work of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Joan graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1952. After completing her dietetic internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay she worked as a professional dietician at various hospitals and nursing homes in Cape Breton. Later in life she discovered the travel bug and, along with her husband, worked for thirteen years as a tour guide with Anna McGoldrick Musical Tours. Everyone who knew Joan appreciated her love of gardening and the great respect she had for the environment. She loved family travel, golfing, curling, senior choir, her bridge club, and dancing with her husband of 67 years. She will perhaps be remembered best for her remarkable cooking, the delicious meals she shared with family and friends, and for her unfailing kindness, politeness and generosity. Joan is survived by her husband, Alfred “Teedie”, and her six children, Bernie (Debbie), Paul, Gerard, Jeanine (Nick) Clague, Gregory, and Robert, her sister-in-law (Joanie), and her grandchildren Ciana, Erin, Laura, Conor, and Julia. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brothers Bernie, Carl, and Kevin. Visitation is at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Friday, April 12, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa’s Church, Saturday, April 13, 12:00 (noon), with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating.
