Obituary of Araxie Oundjian
Mrs. Araxie Oundjian - October 31, 1936 – January 30, 2019 Araxie Oundjian was born in Haifa, Palestine. Her father passed away when she was only 6 months old. Nine years later, her mother married a widower who had three very young children. Araxie became the most loving older sister to her step-siblings. Being the eldest child in the family she was the instant friend, educator, and helper with the most caring manner. Three more children were born to the family and Araxie always retained great responsibility for them while she attended to her schooling. The entire family always admired and respected her and were all very devoted to her. After graduating from secondary school, Araxie married and had one daughter, Vicky. Araxie lost her beloved husband Sahag when Vicky was ten years old. As a civil war broke out in Lebanon, Araxie came to Canada with her daughter in 1976 to join her brothers and sisters. She spoke fluent Armenian, French, Arabic and Turkish which made it very easy for her to learn English. She worked as a Key Punch instructor in a career school in downtown Vancouver, and worked as a key punch operator and a seamstress for seven years, until she decided to move to Montreal, Quebec, where her daughter was attending university. Friends, colleagues and neighbors know her as a gracious, polite, generous and warm person. She was a skilled seamstress, a great cook and enjoyed classical music. Araxie belonged to the Armenian Apostolic Church founded in the 3rd century AD by the apostles Bartholomew and Taddeus. She was an active member of the ARS (Armenian Relief Society) for many years, in Vancouver and Montreal. Araxie moved back to Vancouver in 2006 once she retired. Unfortunately she became ill and had to live in Residence Care Center for the last nine years. Araxie will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
