Eileen Anna Wejr

LUMBY PIONEER PASSES AWAY Eileen Wejr passed away peacefully at home. Eileen was born and raised in Lumby to Jim and Ada McAllister on February 25, 1920. She resided in Lumby most of her life with a few years off and on residing in Vernon. Eileen attended school in Lumby and then went to work in the Post Office with her father who was Post Master at the time. This was when the Post Office was situated in the old Family Café building. Eileen married Larry Wejr on January 14, 1943. Son, Alan was born on May 4, 1944 and daughter, Cheryl was born December 30, 1947. Eileen was an excellent seamstress and made a lot of her own clothes and those of her daughter. She also made bridesmaid and flower girl dresses for members of the family. In later years, she took up quilting and belonged to the Silver Star Quilters, displaying many of her quilts in local quilt shows. She made quilts and wall hangings for her immediate family members. Eileen worked tirelessly with several other women to raise money to build the first Lumby swimming pool. Eileen and the other women took turns supervising and teaching swimming lessons until a lifeguard could be found. She was a member of the Lend A Hand club (a charitable organization) and volunteered for years canvassing for the March of Dimes. She also volunteered in various capacities with Lumby Days for many years. She assisted with fundraising to help build the first curling rink in Lumby and spent many long hours cooking for and manning the canteen and still managed to fit in some curling. When the current curling rink was built, you could still find her busy working or curling. Eileen was a Village Council Member for 8 years from 1976 to 1984. During this time, she was instrumental in bringing an ambulance service to Lumby. When they could not find enough volunteer drivers for the ambulance, she obtained her class 4 driver’s license and drove ambulance from 1978 to 1983. Eileen also put in many hours with the Lumby Museum. For years, she baked pies for their Lumby Days pie and ice cream booth. Up until the age of 95, you could find Eileen sitting in the museum during Lumby Days greeting visitors and answering many questions they had about the area or the past. In 2012, Eileen was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for her long years of service to her community – Lumby – a Village that she loved. Eileen is survived by her son, Alan (Christine); daughter, Cheryl (David Gach); grandchildren; Jeff Wejr, Kelly Schaeffer (George), Melissa (Rod), Lorelei Songer (Jeff) and Sara Gach. She is also survived by her 5 great grandchildren: Michael Kunce (Jessica), Damon Wejr, Brandy Wejr, Kelsey Tkachuk and Bryce Tkachuk and one great great granddaughter: Brooke Kunce. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry, in 1998 and her brothers Bernard, John and Terry. She is further survived by sister, Beryl Nerling and several nieces and nephews. No funeral by request.
